Giving a concrete floor a fresh coat of paint can completely change the atmosphere of any space. Whether you’re sprucing up your industrial floors or brightening up your home flooring, repainting can make a huge difference to your surroundings. However, to achieve a professional-looking finish that stands the test of time, careful preparation is key.

Unlike painting fresh concrete, repainting a floor that has already been coated requires special attention to detail to ensure the new paint adheres properly and doesn’t peel or flake over time. This simple guide aims to provide you with everything you need to know about repainting a concrete floor, ensuring that your paint project is not only successful, but long-lasting too.

How Do You Repaint a Concrete Floor?

Before we start to discuss repainting a concrete floor, it is important to note that all steps provided in this guide have been written to align with the specific properties and application requirements of HydroPro Floor Paint. If you are using a different floor paint to repaint your concrete floor, it is essential that you look at the corresponding product instructions you will have been provided with; as variations in application techniques and curing times are likely to occur.

Preparation Process:

To get a durable and long-lasting finish, it’s important to properly prep any previously painted concrete floors before applying new coatings. Good preparation is key to making sure your floor paint goes on smoothly and holds up over time.

To begin the preparation process, you should start by checking if the existing coatings are in a suitable shape to be overcoated. Any coatings that are damaged, loose, or failing need to be removed before you even consider coating. If you paint over poorly maintained areas, your floor based coatings could fail prematurely or begin to look uneven. If you notice any major issues, you may need to bring the floor down to its bare concrete.

Also, you will need to make sure that all remaining coatings are firmly stuck down. Get rid of any loose or peeling areas, and feather the edges to create a smooth transition between the old and new surfaces.

As with any painting preparation process, you should look to clean the area thoroughly before you start. This will help you see the conditions of any existing coatings. If you have one on hand, you can use a pressure washer to remove any loose debris or poorly adhered coatings. If you do not have a pressure washer at hand, using a stiff bristled brush is a good substitute in removing any excess debris. To obtain the best results before you begin repainting your concrete floor, you should look to degrease your floor to remove any grease, oils, or other contaminants that may have been missed during the cleaning process. Use a good industrial degreaser, and follow the manufacturer’s directions that will be listed within your floor paints’ product information sheet.

Manually or mechanically remove any damaged coatings down to a firm edge. You should make sure that all areas of your floor are well-adhered and smoothed. If your concrete floor is severely damaged via cracks or weather damage for example, you should repair them with a suitable filler and let it fully cure. Also, make sure that all surface areas have been lightly sanded so that the surface is smoothed out, in order to create a good base for the new coating.

Finally, spot prime any bare areas with your chosen floor product, thinned by up to 20% with the appropriate thinner, and let it dry before moving on to the full coating.

Applying Your Coatings:

To start repainting your concrete floor, we need to look at applying your first coat. You must make sure that all necessary preparation steps have been taking before you begin applying any floor paints to your concrete floor. Apply a single coat of your chosen floor paint, such as HydroPro Floor Paint, by brush or roller as directed by manufacturer and allow to dry. You should make sure that all areas of your concrete floor have been covered evenly, you’ll want to inspect the surface for any areas that might need touch-ups as,  using a fine brush to touch up where necessary. When repainting a concrete floor, it’s crucial to ensure that each layer of paint is applied evenly and adheres properly to the surface. If you notice any uneven spots or thin areas, lightly sand those sections to smooth them out before applying the second coat.

When you repaint a concrete floor, proper drying times between coats are essential. Make sure to allow the first coat to fully cure before proceeding with additional layers. Depending on the product you’re using and the conditions of the environment, this could take several hours to a full day. If you’re applying a third coat or more, follow the same steps, ensuring each coat is thoroughly dry before moving on to the next. This method will help you achieve a durable and visually appealing finish when repainting your concrete floor.

For the second coat, repeat the process by applying another layer of your chosen concrete floor paint using a brush or roller, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This second coat will help reinforce the durability of the floor coating and provide a more uniform finish.

After the final coat has been applied and dried, give the floor enough time to cure completely before exposing it to any foot traffic or moving furniture back into place. This step is important in ensuring that the concrete floor paint fully adheres and provides long-lasting protection.
